The owners of this Saskatoon condo are avid travellers. “When you enjoy luxuries in a hotel, you wonder: Why don’t I have this at home?” says Curtis Elmy, who designed this bathroom with Atmosphere Interior Design partner Trevor Ciona. “These clients understand that hotels are a great source of design ideas.” The owners purchased an adjoining unit with floor-to-ceiling windows and a view of the castle-like Delta Hotels Bessborough to create an enviable new retreat. They requested two shower doors, with one door opening directly to their sixth-floor patio and pool. “Everyone in Saskatoon desires that view,” says Curtis. “And when you have a home that makes you feel comfortable, you don’t want to leave.”

A renovated ensuite in a home in Calgary’s Lake Bonavista neighbourhood takes its cues from nature. “This house is right off the lake, so that was our jumping-off point,” says designer Nyla Free. “The soft blues and chocolatey walnut stain on the oak vanity create an earthy prairie vibe.” The client takes cold plunges in the lake every morning and ends the night with a warm bath. The renovation meant reimagining the layout to create a central wet room that consolidated the tub and shower into one space and eliminated extra walls. A corridor leads to a private area with a coffee station where they can get ready.

The walls in this circa-1930 home in Montreal’s Notre-Dame-de-Grâce district burnish the bathroom in a honeyed, golden glow that enhances its heritage. “Every house has its own history, and it’s important for us to create a design that harmonizes with its era or the architectural style,” says designer Laurence Pons Lavigne of Blanc Marine Intérieurs, who worked alongside Mélanie Cherrier on the project. “The goal was not to strip everything away and start from scratch, but to enhance the existing structure.” By shifting the location of the plumbing to maximize space and using timeless materials, this classic bathroom is now more functional, with a soothing ambience.

When renovating their home in Toronto’s west end, Laura and Dan Keogh were inspired by the former Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, townhouse bathroom of EyeSwoon blogger Athena Calderone. They hired designer Suzanne Dimma, who layered in design elements including statement marble, a floating vanity and an arched niche behind the freestanding tub flanked by windows. “It was a challenge to take a formula and make it work for this floor plan, orientation and scale,” says Suzanne. “There was no way to replicate it exactly.” She introduced new features like the custom marble plinth, which Laura can use when applying her makeup at a nearby mirrored cupboard. Suzanne opted to frame the shower with a heavily veined Calacatta Viola trim. “We did a few things differently to tailor this bathroom specifically to the homeowners,” says Suzanne. “We used a crisper palette and more high-contrast marble accents.”

There was nothing “technically” wrong with the bathrooms in Evelyn and Chester’s home in Toronto’s High Park neighbourhood. That said, the ensuite was dark, dated and full of faux travertine, and their daughters’ shared bathroom needed updating and was lacking personality. After saving inspiration images on Pinterest and sleuthing online, they called on designer Keeley McCleary to bring both bathrooms into the 21st century.

The couple had previous experience working with a designer and knew what they were looking for. “They wanted to start by stripping the principal bathroom back to the studs with a gut reno,” says Keeley. Then, the designer would create a bright, spa-like ensuite retreat with Scandi touches and better functionality. The next order of business was the girls’ bathroom. “We wanted to create a modern, feminine space for our kids that incorporated some of their favourite colours,” says Evelyn.

“The clients don’t plan to redo the bathrooms in five or even 10 years, so they were willing to invest in what was important — and what would stand the test of time,” says Keeley. For Marie-Pierre Gauthier, architecture and interior design always go hand in hand. That connection was top of mind when her design firm, CMPG Design Construction, took on the build of a new house for a family of five in Saint-Lazare, Que., a leafy town near downtown Montreal. For the principal bathroom, the clients wanted a zen space they could retreat to after a long day of working in the city.

This renovated ensuite bathroom in north Toronto embodies an interesting reno lesson: it is possible to get a totally new look without moving the plumbing. That said, while the footprint here stayed exactly the same, designers Alana Firestone and Jordy Fagan of Collective Studio rethought every piece and finish, creating a layered, old world look that’s warm and inviting, but also youthful enough for the owners and their two young sons.

Built 20 years ago, the 5,000-square-foot house was still in good shape, but it looked dated and a bit tired. “Everything was in working order in the bathroom,” says Jordy. “This was about wanting the space to reflect the owners’ style, to make their mark on it so it felt like them.” The new space is elevated and serene, a far cry from the dated bathroom it used to be.
