It’s no surprise we love small spaces at House & Home — we dedicate the entire September to this topic. “There’s something about the efficiency of a well-designed small space that’s so appealing,” says Emma Reddington, H&H’s deputy editor. “Everything is where you need it, and your movements and actions are minimized. It’s like a well-choreographed dance — so satisfying.” Everyday dishes within reach, sufficient space to prep food, easy access to baste the roast in the oven and plenty of hidden storage. These compact kitchens don’t sacrifice stylish, bold design. Below, see hardworking kitchens that do more with less!

When Beth Watt bought her midtown Toronto home in 2013, she knew she would eventually renovate. The back room’s southern exposure bathed it in beautiful natural light, and she wanted to amplify that warmth by creating an inviting space, including the kitchen, a new banquette seating area, plus an elegant living room, that would be perfect for cooking, entertaining or for when her two adult kids were home from school abroad. She hired Lindsay Mens, Tommy Smythe and Ashley Ylanko of TOM Design Collective for the project, which features exposed beams, cream cabinets and millwork, plush seating and hits of green and limestone. Learn more about the creative process behind this warm and inviting kitchen transformation and shop the look below.

A roomy kitchen with a palette inspired by the Canadian Shield.

When Allyson, a health-care professional, and Jon, a real-estate agent, bought their north Toronto home in 2020, one thing stood out: the beautiful parkland setting. “I’m from northern Ontario and couldn’t imagine myself living in the city,” says Allyson. “But then Jon found us a house in the woods!” With the property backing onto a large city park and ravine network, bringing the outdoors in became the design brief for the full gut renovation and addition.

The couple’s close friend, the late Alex Vizvary, came up with architectural plans and then, in 2021, the couple hired Adam Mather of Mather Fine Homes for the build and Beth Lowenfeld of Four Blocks South for the interiors. “Allyson and Jon really wanted that connection to nature, so the Canadian Shield became the inspiration for our rich palette of colours and textures,” says Beth. That translated into cabinets painted in Porch Swing by Benjamin Moore, a gorgeous veined Calacatta Monet marble for the backsplash and counters, small touches of satin brass and warm, custom-stained oak shelving. “We wanted to stay close to colours that are inherent in nature and their immediate environment,” says Beth.

On any given day, Allyson and Jon can be found using some part of the kitchen. “Jon works at the island and our 16-month-old is often found crawling between the stools, creating her own obstacle course,” says Allyson with a laugh. A new picture window takes pride of place on the back wall and is where Allyson likes to look out at the verdant setting. “With all the greenery, it just feels like home to me,” she says. Step inside the idyllic Canadian Shield-inspired kitchen below.

Inside A Dreamy Decorative Kitchen By Sabrina Albanese https://houseandhome.com/gallery/parisian-brasserie-inspired-kitchen/ Fri, 02 May 2025 19:47:07 +0000 https://houseandhome.com/?post_type=gallery&p=487222

“Because the owners wanted that trad, old French look, I gravitated toward a Parisian brasserie aesthetic,” says designer Sabrina Albanese.

Consider this kitchen in North York, Ont., the equivalent of a profiterole — it’s full of rich flavours and textures, luscious gleaming surfaces and buttery finishes. The French dessert reference is apt: the owners dreamed of a kitchen with fabulous European style.

Designer Sabrina Albanese riffed on that idea when she tackled the reno. “Because the owners wanted that trad, old French look, I gravitated toward a Parisian brasserie aesthetic,” says Sabrina.

She also gathered inspiration from her travels. A curved, brass-framed cabinet inspired by a Milanese espresso shop was created to take the place of traditional uppers. “While researching elements of brasseries, I noticed a lot of metal,” she says. “My goal was to find a way to make it feel warm in this kind of space.”

The owners are over the moon with their new space. “It was a bespoke project, customized to the family — the beauty is in the details.” Take a look inside the Parisian brasserie-inspired kitchen below.

Dart Studio Brings Function And A Modern Flair To This Toronto Kitchen https://houseandhome.com/gallery/modern-toronto-kitchen/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 19:59:08 +0000 https://houseandhome.com/?post_type=gallery&p=485739

Designers Olivia Botrie and Mariane Kawamura take the kitchen in this 1930s-era city home to new heights by layering in natural materials and textural elements.

Even though the kitchen in this 1930s-era home in Toronto’s Danforth area had relatively new finishes, it also had one major flaw. “There was only one drawer!” says principal designer Olivia Botrie with a laugh. Olivia and senior designer Mariane Kawamura, both of Dart Studio, were hired to bring much-needed function and modern finishes to the space.

The original kitchen was shoehorned into a corner of a great room that included an unused family room. Not only that, two swing doors to the backyard gobbled up space. The first thing the designers did was expand the kitchen into the family room, remove the swing doors and create a 15-foot run of cabinets along one wall. This allowed them to double the size of the island, swapping in an eight-foot-long walnut version. One of the kitchen’s standout moments is the arched niche, an impromptu bar area with an undercounter beverage fridge. “We had an opportunity for a big shelf moment,” says Mariane.

Post-reno, the owners love their refreshed space, packed with rich woods, interesting textures and warm, modern touches. Take a look inside the modern Toronto kitchen — and shop the look— below.
