Seamlessly blending old and new is one of the trickiest but most essential tasks in any renovation project. When Linnea Lions and Martin de Sousa, the co-founders of Designström, were asked to modernize a 1920s English cottage–style house in midtown Toronto, they had their work cut out for them.

The homeowners, a professional couple with two boys, wanted to retain the classic character of the exterior with its stucco siding and charming sash windows, but they also wanted to bring in new elements. The addition, for instance, would be modern, with big expanses of glass framed in black metal.

Getting what you want from a reno takes time, as a professional couple discovered after buying their circa-1860, 2,000-square-foot, three-bedroom home in Toronto’s idyllic Wychwood Park neighbourhood. The woodland views and pond proximity were pure magic in this midtown location, but the house needed work. The owners, who have two young kids, decided to “test-drive” the place for a full year before making any structural changes. “They wanted to live in the house’s quirks before renovating,” says Jo Levitan, co-designer with Maayan Kessler at Kessler Levitan Design, the design firm hired for the project.

When they got the green-light in 2022, Jo and Maayan along with architectural design firm Hatch Designs embarked on the extensive renovation, having the faulty wiring and bad plumbing replaced and redoing the quirkier elements including a kooky, all-pink bathroom and a bedroom wrapped entirely in cedar.

With its vibrant mix of old and new, Keith and Michael Battista’s downtown Toronto home is proof that when opposites attract, design magic happens. Every detail of their Victorian has been carefully considered, from the dining room’s wall panel with reeded glass to the laser-cut basement stair treads. It’s the handiwork of designer Jennifer Kominek and architect Gloria Apostolou of Post Architecture, who spearheaded a two-year-long renovation that gave the couple’s home of 20 years a new lease on life. From the outside, it’s a regular semidetached house; inside, contemporary details pop against old world panelling and Italian floors.

Studio No. 33 Breathes New Life Into A Classic, Tudor-Style Home While Maintaining Its Roots https://houseandhome.com/gallery/historical-home-makeover-forest-hill/ Wed, 07 May 2025 18:04:06 +0000 https://houseandhome.com/?post_type=gallery&p=486940

Chloe Goldberg and Jenna Ruzulo of Studio No. 33 reinvigorate a circa-1929 Toronto home with details that nod to its historical charm.

Helena and Jeff Axler have lived in this Tudor-style home in Toronto’s Forest Hill neighbourhood for nearly 40 years. The couple has raised three sons here; they’ve held birthday parties and brunches, and made memories by the pool. “Our place was always the central hub when our kids were growing up, and now we have six grandchildren,” says Helena. “It’s a big, rambling old house with lots of nooks and crannies.”

Solid craftsmanship and period details like leaded glass windows are a given in this circa-1929 house, which has seven bedrooms and is nearly 6,200 square feet. One of the biggest wow moments is in the foyer, where wood panels envelop the space.

Despite the architectural highlights, the interiors were somewhat gloomy: the limestone floor in the vestibule was drab, the kitchen was tired, and the low and narrow doorways needed updating. Upstairs, the principal ensuite was also ready for a refresh. So, the couple hired Chloe Goldberg and Jenna Ruzylo of Studio No. 33 for a down-to-the-studs renovation that would preserve the character — no white paint over that fabulous wood foyer! “We wanted to bring in modern elements that would enhance, rather than overshadow, the home’s historical charm,” says Chloe. “Before the reno, the place felt heavy. We wanted it to be breezier and lighter.”

The house is now the best version of itself, a bright, welcoming home that balances modern living with timeless character. “Working with Helena and Jeff was a deeply personal collaboration,” says Chloe. “Our own shared history gave me the insight I needed to create a space that felt very authentic to them.” Read more about this historical home makeover below.
