Friendly, warm, fun, colourful and humble are words that describe not only my mom’s new home, but my mom, Jennine McCourt, herself. I suppose that’s what we designers strive for — to create interiors that reflect the people who live there. After my dad passed, we needed to sell the family home and find something simple, special and manageable for my mom so she could focus on her community instead of a property that was too big for her.

We found this mid-construction, 1,200-square-foot home in Morrisburg, Ont., where my mom has spent most of her life, for $430K. It had the most perfect compact layout: small enough for her day-to-day life but open enough to host family get-togethers. An hour after viewing the place, we found ourselves signing the paperwork with a move-in date just over three months later. We needed to quickly put together a design plan that included tile, hardwood flooring, faucets, sinks, mouldings, doors, trim, handles, lighting and all of the other finishing elements for the new-build.

Designer Rosie Daykin has been a familiar face in the pages of House & Home. Over the years, we’ve featured her two storey 1920s home and, later, her ranch-style bungalow, both in Vancouver. We’ve watched her career shift to baking — for 14 years she owned Butter Baked Goods — and we’ve celebrated her cookbooks and love of gardening.

Recently, Rosie has returned to her first passion, design. There was no better place to start than with her own home, where she and her husband, Paul, have lived for 18 years. They grappled with selling the 3,000-square-foot bungalow to downsize to a condo, as many of their friends had done. “Financially, it made sense to invest more into our house to get exactly what we wanted,” says Rosie. “We love our home: it’s the perfect size for two, and I couldn’t give up my chickens!”

Rosie had floated the idea of refreshing the house, but Paul countered that it was fine the way it was. “We just moved in a few years ago!” he said at the time. “Then, she reminded me that that was back in 2007.”

Her goal was to update the home to reflect her authentic style. “My love for old things, layered rooms and the balance between old and new are what come naturally to me.” She wanted to feel cocooned, grounded and comforted. For Rosie, that meant adding colour, pattern, texture — and wallpapers — throughout.

With soaring, 20-foot-tall windows accented by louvered screens, the new Spring 2025 Princess Margaret Showhome shines like a gem. This year’s house is contemporary, a decision designer Brian Gluckstein and architect Richard Wengle came to after assessing the location.

“We’d always done traditional houses for the lottery primarily because they were in a mature neighborhood,” says Brian. “But at this site, we saw that it would be an opportunity to build a contemporary house,” adds Richard, who’s worked with Brian on eight showhomes, as well as numerous condos and residential houses. “We wanted to capture extensive garden views, take advantage of the natural light and experiment with more modern forms.”

Designing a pared-back, contemporary home was a chance for Brian to show off his versatility to a broader audience. “Some people think we only do traditional,” he says. “While we often do contemporary houses for private clients, we haven’t had that opportunity with the Princess Margaret Home Lottery. Changing things up helps keep it exciting.”

For Gianpiero Pugliese and Mariya Naumov, crafting their dream kitchen wasn’t about sifting through inspiration boards or collecting swatches. Instead, the couple — husband-and- wife principals of the design-build firm Audax — found their vision in a single, timeless masterpiece: The Art of Painting by 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. “Every project I do, I automatically think of a painting; it’s my starting point,” says Mariya, who studied art history and worked in a gallery before going to school for interior design.

Mariya’s passion for art is matched by her husband’s devotion to history. For Gianpiero, an architect, designer and master builder, an appreciation for what has come before is essential to good design. “Young architects and designers aren’t taught the principles of the past. They’re encouraged to always create something new,” he says. “Modern-built environments sometimes neglect beauty, favoring function over aesthetics.” The Audax design philosophy, which Gianpiero calls “Human Architecture,” is about tailoring each project to its specific context while maintaining the core principles of beauty and harmony. “Being here gives me such a sense of joy and peace,” he says. “To know we built it from nothing, that every little thing was a decision we made — it’s life-changing.”

The house that was an eclectic expression of Radha’s South Asian heritage for a busy modern family. Since then, we’ve featured more of Ali’s work and tracked her rise to fame.
