The Best White Paint Colors: Which White Is Right? https://houseandhome.com/gallery/best-white-paint-colors/ Mon, 01 Jul 2024 15:36:19 +0000 https://houseandhome.com/?post_type=gallery&p=474184

This is by far the question I am asked most often. That’s because there are way too many whites to choose from. It’s no surprise that designers all use the same few white paint colors from the leading paint companies, over and over again. Here is what matters:

You get what you pay for. The most expensive paint from the leading paint companies cost more because not only are they good quality paints that cover well with fewer coats, but the actual color is more complex. It has more tints in it which means that the color is richer. This goes for whites especially. That’s the reason that some painted walls look like they are just primed, while others have depth saturation, and reflect the light beautifully.

It all depends on the light in your room. You absolutely must paint a board with primer plus two coats of the white paint you are testing. Carry it around the house and see how it looks in both day and night time.

Sheen level matters. It’s all personal, but I like a low lustre finish such as Pearl for walls, and a semi gloss and sometimes a high gloss for baseboards, trim, and mouldings.

The more whites the better. I believe in using several different whites in one space. You don’t have to use 10 in a couple of rooms like I do…but use two or three if you can. One on walls, one on baseboards or one on doors. The differences will be very subtle but they will still create visual interest.

Discover my 3 favorite whites from 3 different brands below.

The Secret To Nancy Meyers’ Style https://houseandhome.com/gallery/nancy-meyers/ Fri, 14 Jun 2024 13:31:28 +0000 https://houseandhome.com/?post_type=gallery&p=474210

It’s effortless chic at it’s best, which is why “Nancy Meyers homes” has become one of Pinterest’s hottest search trends in 2024.

Why do we love the rooms we see in the movies of filmmaker Nancy Meyers? Think back to Father Of The Bride, Baby Boom, Private Benjamin, What Women Want, The Holiday, It’s Complicated, The Intern, and of course Something’s Gotta Give.

In every one of these films there was at least one memorable room that I can close my eyes and remember perfectly. I’ll bet you can too. That’s because the decorating in every Nancy Meyers set is styled to perfection. Her rooms tell a story about the characters who live there and are as much a part of the film as the dialogue. And while the style of her rooms varies, they are usually an updated take on American Coastal decorating, with a twist. It’s effortless chic at its best, which is why “Nancy Meyers homes” has become one of Pinterest’s hottest search trends in 2024. Again!

Over the years I’ve written about Nancy’s film sets more than once. In 2010 it was the set of It’s Complicated that inspired a story. And in 2016 It was the kitchen in The Intern.

A Dutch colonial farmhouse on Lake Simcoe is thoughtfully restored.

There’s a benefit to having a well-travelled client. Who can holiday in the south of France and the English countryside or comb through the markets of India without wanting to bring some of that beauty home? “My client loves to travel, so ‘Parisian French,’ ‘English Country,’ ‘Classic American Trad’ and the textiles of India happily found their way into the recent renovation of their country house,” says designer Lynda Reeves.

After working with Lynda on two other projects, the client reached out for help when she bought a graceful Dutch Colonial farmhouse on Lake Simcoe. Intended to be a weekend retreat for extended family, the early-1900s house needed help — previous renovations had removed some of the original detail.

Architect Paul Roth was hired to restore some of those details and add new windows, exterior finishes and structural elements. Lynda and her team at LRDS were brought in to do the interiors. “The mandate was to transform this farmhouse into what we thought an original heritage country house should feel like,” says Lynda. The owner, who frequently hosts her six adult children and 12 grandchildren, has fond memories of being her for the first time. “When I stepped on the property after a long winter in the city, I felt my shoulders just drop,” she says. “This house is one of the first in the neighborhood and has quite a history in this little community, so I wanted to preserve the feel of it.” Architect Paul Roth adds: “Much of the interior was gutted during this renovation, but we retained the original detailing and character wherever possible.”

The two-year-long project started in 2020 and included all-new windows and exterior doors, siding, insulation and a new cedar-shingled roof. On the main floor, the hardwood floors, staircase, fireplace, interior French doors and fir panelling in the sunroom were all retained, while the kitchen was expanded. Upstairs, a new bathroom was created and the existing bathrooms were all redesigned.
